There are two sorts of heroic ideals for the Ancient Greeks: 1) the competent, ultra-badass soldier, the best example of which is Achilles, and 2) the sly thinker who uses his wiles to get what he wants, the best example of which is Odysseus.
The Ancient Greeks had a bit of sea pirate in them, so morally speaking tricking people was perfectly acceptable as long as you made a clean getaway.
