Hello all! I love the idea of this project, I think it will really help me to focus my reading and to meet my goals. Excellent list -- with a lot of things that aren't on other lists yet. I'm surprised by how many times the Solzhenitsyn has appeared on lists so far.
And can I take this opportunity to pimp my favorite Steinbeck, The Moon is Down? It was written as a piece of antiwar propaganda and distributed via underground networks across Europe. It's a fascinating (and short) novel about the occupation of an unnamed town in an unnamed country by an unnamed army, but that's a very thin veil...
I own/read Survival in Auschwitz. It is an amazing book. I read a similar book titled I am Rosemarie (a YA about the Holocaust)when I was younger and those stories are so touching and real.
Such strong voices. I'm sure you'll love it. It's also a short read as well.
I love Elizabeth Gaskell. Her books are Jane Austen with a social reform twist. After you've finished North and South make sure to watch the BBC dramatization. It's one of those cases where the "movie" is almost better than the book. :) I think it's six hours long, so don't start the second part (there's three parts) unless you're ready to watch the rest of it. You won't be able to stop watching after the second part. Enjoy!
Seeing Peter Ackroyd on your list reminds me that I should have included Poe: A Life Cut Short on mine.
